I don't believe I'm ever going to have a baby, I've tried everything.  So how can this method work when nothing else has?

The simple truth is unhealthy beliefs and emotions affect fertility.  In recent years, much research has been done on the relationship between the mind and the body.  Scientists have shown that thoughts and feelings create chemicals called neuropetptides which have receptor sites throughout the body.

A good example of how beliefs affect the body is the stress response, otherwise known as 'fight or flight'.  This is the body's natural reaction to threat or danger, so any situation we interpret as not okay will trigger this response in some way.  Situations of ongoing stress, such as infertility, increase the levels of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol which affect the body's natural biochemical balance.  Interestingly, the section of the brain that controls these hormones, the hypothalamus, also controls the sex hormones responsible for reproduction.

In a deeply relaxed state, emotional arousal such as anger and fear is reduced.  The relaxation response is triggered, which is the diametric opposite of fight or flight and this allows the body to return to a calm balanced state.

The Fertile Body Method can't guarantee a baby at the end of the process - but then neither can natural conception or IVF. What it can do, is help you to make specific emotional, physical and mental changes to enhance your fertility - giving you and your body the extra support it needs for conception.

Do we both need to come?

We tend to work with women mostly but are happy to see partners by referral if they are happy to come.  Clients are set 'homework' between sessions and partners are encouraged to get involved. Feedback at the next session tends to be that of both of you.  Each case is, of course, completely individual so if it does appear your partner would also benefit from treatment then that would be encouraged.

What are the stages of treatment?

The stages will vary according to individual need and whether IVF or similar procedures are also going on, but Sjanie Hugo Wurlitzerleading fertility expert and the creator of The Fertile Body Method has created the following therapeutic framework:

1) Outcome
To determine the desired outcome for the treatment.  Set a therapeutic goal, gather information and determine the best possible course for treatment.

2) Balance
The main aim of this stage is to help the client develop inner resources and increase feelings of well being.  This is done by addressing both internal and external factors, such as stress at work, diet etc that are affecting overall well-being.

3) Resolve
Once greater psychological and emotional well-being have been established, we look at any unresolved issues that may be preventing the couple from becoming parents.

4) Enhance
Working with the conscious and unconscious mind to enhance fertility.  This is predominantly achieved through visualisation, guided imagery and mental rehearsal.

5) Prepare
This preparation could be for pregnancy, birth or parenthood.  It also includes mental, emotional and physical preparation for any medical treatments like IVF.

6) Support
This stage suppoerts the client to help them maintain changes they have made.  This could be whether a pregnancy does or does not ensue.
